When you think of Shark Bay you think of Monkey Mia and hand feeding dolphins. These are some of the other things we did during our stay in this beautiful area:

  • Hamlin Pool to see the Stromatolites (living bacteria that date back billions of years), shell Block Quarry and the old Telegraph Station
  • Shark Bay Discovery and Visitor Centre at Denham
  • Eagle Bluff - a boardwalk on the edge of the cliff
  • Shell beach - made entirely of tiny shells up to 10 metres deep
  • learnt about Project Eden - steps being taken to protect the wildlife in the area
  • Ocean Park Aquarium - watch the shark feeding
  • Hand feed dolphins at Monkey Mia. I was lucky enough to be chosen to feed a fish to Nicky the Dolphin.
  • Wildlife tour on a catamaran from Monkey Mia - we saw dugongs, sea snake, dolphins, turtles, eagle rays, tiger shark and plenty of birds
  • Emus are a common site - father with 10 chicks - so cute
  • Francois Peron National Park - spectacular scenery with red cliffs, white sand and blue ocean. Visited Big Lagoon and Little Lagoon.
  • Camped at Tamala Station
  • 4WD to Steep Point (western most point of the Australian Mainland) in Edel Land National Park
  • Shelter Bay - a camping spot on the way to Steep Point
  • Zuytdorp Cliffs and Thunder Bay Blowholes
  • Fishing from Steep Point - apparently one of the best land based game fishing spots in the world (they use helium balloons to float the bait down to the water)

It was very windy during our visit to Shark Bay but this did not deter us from seeing as much as possible - cannot wait to take my children for a visit.
