Point Quobba is about 75 kilometres north-west of Carnarvon in Western Australia, located adjacent to the 'Blowholes" which are quite spectacular to watch during a large ocean swell. The water is pushed up through holes in the cliff spraying 20 metres into the air.
The lagoon at Point Quobba is referred to as "the aquarium" and is a very popular place for swimming, snorkelling and picnics (lovely shaded structures are provided to sit and enjoy the view). It was very windy on the day we visited Point Quobba but the lagoon was relatively calm and protected from the large ocean swell. My husband went snorkelling and said there was a interesting variety of coral and small fish - this is a very safe spot for children.
We headed up the stairs at the end of the beach to explore the rocky platforms and discovered some wildflowers and interesting rock pools. You can see the blowholes from this vantage point. Point Quobba is a beautiful spot and well worth the day trip from Carnarvon. There is a camping spot near by which $11 per person per night - you will need your own chemical toilet. Apparently a ranger is on site to collect camping fees.
Point Quobba is a Fish Habitat Protection Area and home to a huge range of marine species - check with the Western Australia Department of Fisheries to see where fishing is permitted or collect information from the Carnarvon Visitor Information Centre. Look out for the wheel rims nailed to telegraph poles along the road - created by the council as places for birds to nest - very ingenious.
