Pondalowie Bay is a beautiful spot in Innes National Park at the bottom of the Yorke Peninsula, South Australia. There are various car parking areas provided along the bay for day visitors to explore the area.

At the southern end there are several fishing huts in the sand dunes and fishing boats operate from the bay sometimes travelling as far as Kangaroo Island in search of lobsters. These huts were built before it became a national park. At this end of the Bay are two camping areas – one for tents and one for campervans and caravans.  In the tent section is a very nice barbeque area and a toilet block that services both camping areas. The camp sites are well defined and must be booked on line at parks.sa.gov.au/innes. It is advisable to book ahead during holiday times. These are unpowered sites.

Pondalowie Bay is protected from the waves by several islands. The cliffs at the southern end are quite interesting and it looks as though you could almost walk to South Island during a low tide – the water is clear.

A smaller camping area is available near the Pondolowie surf break - Casuarina Campground.  The sites vary in size and the toilet block seems to be quite new with a water tank provided for washing hands. This campground is surrounded by dense low shrub full of interesting native birds and animals - plenty of wildflowers if you look closely.

Pondalowie Surf Break has a very large car parking area which indicates that this is a popular spot during summer and/or good surfing conditions. A major surfing event called the Yorke Classic is held in Innes National Park every October long weekend. There is a great boardwalk over the sand dunes to the water (quite a distance but easy) and the beach is accessed from a long viewing platform. Steps lead down to the beach in three locations with a long stretch of white sand in either direction.

We enjoyed our day visiting the Innes National Park (entry fees apply) and would highly recommend Pondalowie Bay as one of the highlights.
