Undara Experience

Undara Volcanic is a national park in North Queensland, Australia. It is notable for its lava tubes and gem fossicking. Minerals found there include topaz, moonstone, peridot, aquamarine, garnet, quartz and gold. The park contains the remains of the Earth’s longest flow of lava originating from a single volcano. The park is remote, and accessible from the regional centres of Townsville or Cairns.

I had been to the Undara Lave Tubes many years ago and wanted my husband to experience these amazing formations during our caravanning trip around Queensland. The road is sealed all the way to Undara and we drove from Georgetown along the Gulf Development Road before heading south to Undara.

The Undara Experience is quite a large set up with lots of old restored railway carriages used for accommodation and cafes. There are plenty of other accommodation options - Pioneer Huts, Swag tent village (permanent tents), Caravan and camping ground and a special area set aside for groups called the Safari Shelter. The caravan sites are drive through and off-set from each other so that you have plenty of space - between each site is a fire area with a cooking plate on a platform.

The tubes were created by a lava flow from an erupting volcano many years ago and need to be seen to be believed. We joined several tours while staying at Undara

  • The Archway Explorer - a 2 hour tour of the Undara Lava Tubes which was very interesting to learn about the geological history of the area and walk down into a tube.
  • Wildlife at Sunset - a drive through bushland to spot kangaroos, wallabies and Australian parrots before we stopped for cheese and wine while watching the sunset. After nightfall we headed down to the mouth of one of the tubes to watch the micro-bats come out to look for food during the night. There are thousands of these small creatures

We also joined one of the campfire evenings and sat around listening to the guides tell stories and read Australian Poetry. This is very relaxing and you may meet some interesting people from all around the world. This is a truly unique place and I highly recommend you put it on your bucket list.
