Ravenshoe is just off the Kennedy Highway on the Atherton Tablelands in northern Queensland. The average rainfall is 50 inches and of course it rained during both our visits to this lovely little town. Ravenshoe is the highest town in Queensland and lays claim to the highest Pub - Top Pub (Tully Falls Hotel).
We arrived in time to see the Ravenshoe Steam train, Capella, leaving the Railway Station (of course Queensland's highest station). Capella is a D17 class steam locomotive which was restored in 1989.
The main street of Ravenshoe is very wide and plenty of space to park the van before going to the Popular Cafe for lunch - an Old fashioned milk bar which was lovely and the staff friendly. The Information Centre has a great display of the aboriginal heritage of the area. The volunteers manning the centre were really helpful and they advised us to visit the Millstream Falls so we headed back down the road about 3-4 kilometres (again plenty of room to park the van before walking to the falls). I highly recommend visiting both the Millstream Falls and Little Millstream Falls.
On our second visit Ravenshoe we stayed at the Railway Caravan Park which is very close to town. This is a basic park at the old railway station and the ladies toilets are on the station platform while the amenities are contained in a demountable building -all clean and the water was hot. We walked along the main street and had a drink at the highest pub in Queensland, built at 920 metres above sea level - the Top Pub. The dining room was very neat with a fire burning and someone playing the piano - lovely atmosphere.
The Ravfuel & Oil depot on Moffat Street Ravenshoe was the cheapest place to buy fuel. We also found a public dump point on Ascham Street which was easy to access and very convenient - the Visitor Information Centre can give you directions.
