Port Douglas

Port Douglas is a town in Far North Queensland, Australia, approximately 70 km (40 mi) north of Cairns. Its permanent population was 3,205 at the time of the 2011 census. The town's population can often double, however, with the influx of tourists during the peak tourism season May–September. The town is named in honour of former Premier of Queensland, John Douglas. Port Douglas developed quickly based on the mining industry. Other parts of the area were established with timber cutting occurring in the area surrounding the Daintree River and with settlement starting to occur on lots around the Mossman River by 1880.

Port Douglas is a very popular holiday destination in far north Queensland - about 67 kilometres north of Cairns.  A number of tours leave from Port Douglas to boat around and snorkel on the Great Barrier Reef. It is also a great base to explore Mossman Gorge, the Daintree Rainforest, Daintree River, and Cape Tribulation.

We were lucky enough to be staying in Port Douglas over a weekend allowing a chance to visit the markets held each Sunday in the park at the end of Marcrossan Street. We tasted chocolate coated frozen bananas, frozen ice blocks full of tropical fruit, fresh fruit juice, and a treat from a stall called 'fruit pooh' - a real fruit sorbet made from frozen pieces of fruit processed through a spiral juicer – mango, coconut and banana.  These markets are  large with a variety of stalls, fresh fruit and veges, cooked dishes, tea, chocolate, coconut (freshly opened for you to drink), handmade clothes, jewellery, timber products etc.

The main street of Port Douglas is full of bars, restaurants, cafes and shops which were being very well patronized on a Sunday of the long weekend. The prices for meals at most of these outlets seemed to quite reasonable.

We enjoyed lunch at the Port Douglas Surf Club overlooking Four Mile Beach. Covered verandah for seating, great food with and  interesting variety. We had pulled pork in breadcrumb with bean salsa and green tea dipping sauce, plus battered coral trout served in tortillas with avocado dip and salsa with sweet potato chips - Delicious,

After lunch we headed up to Flagstaff Hill Lookout for photos of Four Mile Beach - beautiful views.
