Georgetown can be found on the Gulf Development Road and is a really interesting little town to visit (between Croydon and Mount Surprise). We booked into the Goldfield Caravan Park for two nights and ended up staying four. This is a small park on St George Street which has lots of shade, basic (but very clean) amenities and on-site managers who are very welcoming and helpful.

We left our van at the Park and headed out to Cobbold Gorge to stay the night in our tent. Great experience. On the way back we stopped at Forsayth and had a the best hamburger so far on this trip. The iconic Savannahlander train from Cairns stops here once a week and memorabilia from the mines and railways are scattered around the Park near the station.

Back to Georgetown and called in to the local butcher - a lovely old country butcher shop. We had been told that his sausages were the best around so we purchased some for dinner - they were so good we re-stocked before leaving town.

The Visitor Information Centre in Georgetown houses the Ted Elliott Mineral Collection – Terrestial. This was great and well worth a look at only $8 each - highly recommended. These specimens had been collected over many years by Ted Elliot and who was a well known expert in identifying these pieces.

Next on out list was a tour of a local station - Flat Creek Station -  only 13,000 hectares which is small for the area. On the way to Flat Rock Creek we stopped at the Chimney Stack near Cumberland Lake to look for finches that frequent the area (this is a very popular spot for bird enthusiasts). The road into Flat Creek Station was very rough but well worth the drive with a warm welcome from the property owner, driven around the property and given every opportunity to take plenty of photos. Flat Creek Station also has a camping ground and the owners allow people to go fossicking for gold around the property.

These are some of the things you can do around this small outback Queensland town.
