During our travels in outback Queensland we stopped for several nights at Charleville - located on the Warrego Highway (from the east) and the Mitchell Highway (from North or South). We stayed at Baileys Bar Caravan Park in town which is one of several parks in the area. The streets are wide which gives you plenty of space to maneuver when towing a caravan. There are some beautiful old building in town and a large levee bank that was constructed after the 1990 floods.

These are some of the things we did while staying in Charleville:

  • Visit the Royal Flying Doctor Service (a new hanger and visitors centre near the airport was being constructed but it was not quite finished)
  • Station tour - Brolgas, Bustards and Beaut Birds Station Tour - very interesting, informative tour on a station just out of town. Features the amazing dam they have created that attracts wonderful birdlife.
  • Convoy Tour of the remains of a Top Secret American Army Base established during WWII - see the Norden Bombsight housed on this top secret base
  • Introduction to the night sky - evening session at the Cosmos Centre
  • Sun Viewing at the Cosmos Centre
  • Bilby Experience, Up Close and Personal - Bilby Breeding Centre

Charleville is situated on the Warrego River and is a great spot for fishing. This is a lovely, friendly country town and we intend to return.
