Atherton Tablelands

The Atherton Tableland is a fertile plateau which is part of the Great Dividing Range in Queensland, Australia. It is located west to south-south-west inland from Cairns. Although it is in the tropical latitudes, its elevated position provides a climate suitable for dairy farming. It has an area of around 32,000 km² with an altitude ranging between 500 and 1,280 m (1,640 and 4,200 ft). The fertility of the soils in the region can be attributed to the volcanic origins of the land.

The Atherton Tablelands in Queensland is a great place to visit - there are plenty of things to see and do and this is a very popular tourist destination. Here are some of the places we visited:

  • Ravenshoe - Highest town in Queensland
  • Millstream Falls - quite spectacular
  • Malanda - Tulip Oak Walk and Rainforest Walk near the Visitor Information Centre - Malanda Falls.
  • Nerada Tea Plantation where you can spot the Lumholtz Tree Kangaroo. They served the best scones, jam and cream with a great pot of locally grown tea.
  • Malanda Dairy Centre and tour of the milk factory.
  • Gallo Dairyland for great cheese, ginger yoghurt, and chocolate
  • Mareeba - Rodeo and Camping ground
  • Coffee Works - historical collection of coffee machines
  • Herberton Historic Village
  • Mount Uncle Distillery - best gin I have ever tasted (Botanic Australis)
  • Jacques Coffee Plantation near Mareeba

This is a large tropical fruit growing area and there a numerous roadside stalls and outlets selling local produce - bananas, avocados and mangoes just to name a few. We really enjoyed our time visiting the Atherton Tablelands and cannot wait to go back and explore some more.
