Serpentine Gorge in the West Macdonnell Ranges is one of the many places to stop while travelling along Namatjira Road west of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. This is a short walk from the car parking area (again shaded seating is available) but there was not much water in the gorge. It was late October and well after the west season. We did see several large flocks of Zebra finches as they came to the water’s edge for a drink. Lovely to see them is such large numbers in the wild.
A fellow traveller told us to head up to the Serpentine Gorge Lookout if we had enough energy. Even though it was very hot, we had walking sticks and plenty of water so thought we would give it a go and take our time. This was a very steep climb up the side of a large hill and I was very pleased I had my walking stick with me to help with balance along the way. We climbed straight up about 80 metres but it was well worth the effort with magnificent views of the West MacDonnell Ranges and down into Serpentine Gorge. It is truly amazing landscape in this part of Australia.
