We were advised to start the Kings Canyon Rim Walk early in the morning as it can get very hot very quickly in the Northern Territory. Some walks with the National Parks are considered too dangerous if it is hot and they are closed to visitors. The large car parking area to begin this walk is just a short drive from Kings Canyon Resort and you should carry plenty of water.
The first part of Kings Canyon Rim Walk is to follow the rock path up about the cliff, ascending about 100 metres before beginning the walk around the top of these great formations. Wonderful viewing areas but be warned you can get very close to the edge in some locations, so please be very careful - don't die for a photo.. The canyon consists of sandstone that dates between 400 and 440 million years old. Brochures can be obtained from the reception of the Kings Canyon Resort that provide details on the geological formation of these amazing cliffs.
Part of the way around this walk you head down into the valley and take a look at the Garden of Eden – remember you will have to climb back up the steps again to reach the other side of the Canyon. The bottom of the ravine is much cooler and has a permanent body of water - this is where a number of guided groups rest for a while and enjoy morning tea.
Up the stairs to other side of canyon and then along the opposite rim before heading down to car park. Very interesting walk and we saw several lizards warming themselves on the rocks - in fact one jumped onto my leg trying to catch flies. Again arrows point out the track to follow - blue arrows. Wonderful morning as the temperature was only 22 degrees when we commenced the walk.
RvTrips highly recommends this walk for spectacular scenery over ancient rocks.
