Uralla is a lovely little town on the New England Highway of NSW between Tamworth and Armidale. We have visited Uralla on many occasions which looks quite beautiful during the autumn months and can be very cold in winter.

There a a couple of caravan parks in town and a range of cafe's restaurants and hotels plus a couple of bakers on the main street. You can search gold or gems at the Wooldridge Recreation and Fossicking Reserve, or take a drive to one of the scenic places around the area:

  • Yarrowyck Nature Reserve and Rock Art Site
  • Dangar's Lagoon
  • Racecourse Lagoon
  • Mt Mutton Walking Trail

Learn about the history of last of the New South Wales' bushrangers, Frederick Wordsworth Ward, better known as "Captain Thunderbolt", who is buried in the Pioneer cemetery at Uralla. There are several other tourist attraction in town relating to Thunderbolt:

  •  McCrossin's Mill Museum - "The Life and Legend of Thunderbolt" Exhibit
  • Thunderbolt's Rock - the rocks used by Captain Thunderbolt to view approaching mail coaches
  • Thunderbolt Statue - a life size statue of Captain Thunderbolt on the main street
  • Constable Walker Memorial Plaque - near Thunderbolt’s Statue it commemorates the bravery of the man who show Captain Thunderbolt

I love the fact that two of the pubs in town are called Top Pub and Bottom Pub - easy to remember.
