The Hunter Region, also commonly known as the Hunter Valley, is a region of New South Wales, Australia, extending from approximately 120 km (75 mi) to 310 km (193 mi) north of Sydney. It contains the Hunter River and its tributaries with highland areas to the north and south. The Hunter Valley is one of the largest river valleys on the NSW coast, and is most commonly known for its wineries and coal industry.

The Hunter Region of NSW is about two hours drive north of Sydney and is apparently Australia's oldest wine growing area. It is also well known for the beautiful horse breeding studs that can be found near Muswellbrook and Scone. This region also has several large open-cut coal mining operations with the coal being transported (mostly by very long trains) to Newcastle for shipping overseas.

Barrington Tops National Park is popular for camping and bush walking with its stunning scenery - beware it can be very cold in winter. I understand it is now a breeding area for the Tasmanian Devil.

You can find great food and wine outlets in the Hunter Region or you can swim with the dolphins in Port Stephens and Nelson Bay. The city of Newcastle is in the region and it has beautiful beaches and a busy harbour. As you can see there is lots to see and do in the Hunter Region and it is a very popular weekend destination for those working and living in Sydney.
