BIG4 Mackay Blacks Beach Holiday Park     Read more ...

We called in to take photos of this BIG4 park at Blacks Beach and found it so nice and friendly that we decided to stay for the night,  which was later extended to two nights. Bob, who lives onsite and works at the park drove us around to look at available cabins. Jodi was working at reception and was very helpful with info on things to do in the area and great places to eat. Her information on the local sugar mill encouraged us to stay the extra day and join the tour.  There are only two sugar mills that run tours in Queensland - Tully and Mackay (Farleigh Mill)

This park is about 40 years old but has been completely redesigned by the owners to accommodate the modern camper and large caravans. This park has a number of established trees for shade at a beautiful beachfront location - Black's Beach. It has a lovely pool  with water slides for the kids.  The large camp kitchen has been created alongside the pool which has been enclosed on 3 sides to protect diners from any strong winds.

The Poolside Cabins have disabled access from the car parking area (all cars in one location), are very new and well appointed.  Park Side Cabins have their own car parking space – a little older but lovely and new inside.

The amenities are accessed using a code and these are very clean and spacious with plenty of room for everyone. We had a lovely drive-through site with helicopter matting (instead of slab) to park beside.  These sites are offset (alternate vans park in the opposite direction) and are available in three power options

  • un-powered
  • powered including electricity
  • powered with electricity paid per use - this can be a great option

Closer to the beach are camping sites with a shaded barbeque area overlooking the water.

The park has a boom gate for security and fully sealed roads allowing easy access for caravans.  It is within walking distance to several shops which include a wonderful Chinese restaurant - Mackay's Golden Sun.

BIG4 Mackay Marine Tourist Park     Read more ...

The Mackay BIG4 Marine Tourist Park along Harbour Road did not look great from the road but wait until you get inside to see the range of facilities. Unfortunately during our visit the plainest looking cabins sat facing the main road distorting my first impression of this park.

Once you head towards reception you will be able to see some of the great facilities for families holidaying at this BIG4 -

  • children's water splash park
  • pool with water slide and wading pool
  • large salt water pool
  • mini golf
  • jumping pillow
  • interesting maze made from used tyres

There are a range of cabins including some relatively new ones overlooking the pool area with large verandahs to sit and relax while keeping an eye of the children.  At the rear of the park is a large wetland area which I understand is good for some barramundi fishing. The park has a number of large caravan or camping sites - some adjoining private ensuites and some large enough for motor homes.

This park is pet friendly but please check with the manager when booking in as this may change during busy periods. The BIG4 Mackay Marine Tourist Park is conveniently located close to the harbour and the CBD with a bus stop right out the front. It has a camp kitchen, fire pit and dump point, plus a range of amenities.

Andergrove Van Park     Read more ...

You can’t miss this large open park in North Mackay with bright blue signs at the gate - we were immediately impressed by the large open spaces.  What a great entrance!  A long driveway from the gate is lined with lovely palms and this park is huge with large flat sights.

Some facilities of Andergrove Van Park include:

  • modern, refurbished camp kitchen
  • disabled amenities
  • tourist information at reception
  • dump point
  • sail-shaded pool
  • great access to sites
  • nice looking ensuite sites

Andergrove Park has a range of cabins and villas including special tradesmen rates for workers. The caravan and camping sites are powered or unpowered with some large enough to cater for all size vehicles.

I understand that one side of the park has been earmarked for permanent sites. Andergrove Van Park is neat and tidy with lovely lawns and gardens - I would not hesitate to stay  here on our next visit to Mackay.

Bucasia Beachfront Caravan Resort     Read more ...

I am not sure that I would call this caravan park a Resort but it certainly has a great location on the beach at Sunset Bay near Mackay, Queensland. Children under 12 and pets are free and we noticed a number of boats accommodated on the sites. The Bucasia Boat Ramp is adjacent to the caravan park alongside Eimeo Creek.

Bucasia Beachfront Caravan Resort has a range of caravan sites - including ocean view, powered (with or without slabs), and some large sites suitable for 5th wheelers or motor homes. They even offer a pet minding service if you want to head out for a tour or boat trip.

Unfortunately we visited during low tide and the water was a long way off in the distance – the dogs loved this as they ran around the sand flats. The park also has powered and unpowered tent sites, barbeque facilities and a camp kitchen. You will find a swimming pool and children’s playground located in the recreation area (Seaview Park) close to the Bucasia Beachfront Caravan Resort.

Central Tourist Park     Read more ...

The Central Tourist Park in Mackay is approximately two kilometres from the heart of the city. The park has a range of budget accommodation, units and villas - some are fully self-contained with cooking facilities. All the accommodation has parking space for your car. This park has a large covered camp kitchen with plenty of seating, a number of barbeques and camp fridges.

Other facilities include:

  • flat screen digital TV
  • 24 meter pool surrounded by coconut palms.
  • some drive through sites are also available
  • amenities block

This park is located just off the Bruce Highway and would be a convenient place to stay when travelling up (or down) the Queensland Coast.

Hilltop Caravan Park     Read more ...

As the name suggest this caravan park sits at the top of a hill about 5 kilometres from Mackay's CBD.  We found it a little difficult to find in the middle of a residential area and I understand this location is for sale. This is only a small park with basic facilities and I am not sure whether it will still operate as a caravan park after the sale goes through.
