During our caravan adventure in the Northern Territory we headed to Kings Canyon Resort in order to take a closer look at this iconic part of Australia. This is a lovely spot in the Watarrka National Park about 475 kilometres from Alice Springs along the Stuart Highway.

Kings Canyon Resort has a large range of accommodation - motel rooms, backpacker lodges plus caravan and camping sites. There is a beautiful reception area as you enter the resort complex and we found the staff to be really helpful, welcoming and friendly. We were allocated a site which had plenty of shade and located close to the one of the amenities blocks. They cater for bus tour groups camping at Kings Canyon Resort with their own covered food preparation area and campsites close to an amenities block.

Dingoes – warning signs around the resort and we saw a couple of these wild animals wandering through the camp looking for food after dark. Do not feed and keep your rubbish inside.

There are a huge range of facilities at Kings Canyon Resort:

  • Several amenities blocks – old but very clean with half barn doors – I guess to keep the dingo out
  • Service station – diesel was $2.03 per litre - if you need fuel you need fuel and it is great to have this facility
  • Pool – plenty of shade and seating plus grass
  • Large outdoor area near bar (Thirsty Dingo Bar) and Desert Oaks Bistro
  • tennis court
  • walk to sunset viewing platform or take the KIngs Canyon Resort Ridge Walk
  • conference room
  • Outback Oasis general store with souvenir shop
  • laundry
  • children's playground

We really enjoyed our stay at Kings Canyon Resort and as it was the quiet season they allowed us a late checkout so we could enjoy the Kings Canyon Rim Walk on our day of departure.
